Nationwide Opioid Crisis and its Effect on the Workplace

Our partners at Quest Diagnostics sent the following information recently and we thought it was worthy of passing along.

Here is a staggering statistic - More than 2.1 million Americans struggle with an opioid use disorder for either prescription pain relievers or heroin.

No one is exempt from the opioid epidemic. Since these drugs are blind to factors such as age, race, gender, education, income, employment status, and geography. This crisis affects our families and communities as well as our workplaces. Although many discussions focus on prescribing guidelines, access to treatment, and overcoming the stigma of addiction, Quest wants to help employers be proactive and aware of the impacts of opioids in the workplace.

Here are some other key statistics Quest shared with us:

  • 70% of employers reported being affected by the opioid epidemic in 2017.
  • Between 2013 and 2016, at-work overdose deaths attributed to the non-medical use of drugs or alcohol increased by 38% annually.
  • Research shows that 21% to 29% of patients who are prescribed opioids for chronic pain end up misusing them.
